Content (Syllabus outline):
Objectives and competences:
The course is designed to teach about the systems for distribution of radio and television signals. Students will briefly learn the basic principles of analogue radio and television systems first. Greater attention will be devoted to more complex digital broadcast transmission technology and the problems to be solved for the reliable transmission of digital images and sound. The course addresses all three broadcast platforms: cable, satellite and terrestrial. For the purpose of a better understanding, the general presentation of the subject will be followed by a systematic treatment of the signal path, from coding in production companies through source and channel coding to the functional interpretation of the receiving signal using integrated receivers or set top boxes. The lectures will be followed by the overview of the methods of radio spectrum planning and allocation, and standardization in this area.
Intended learning outcomes:
Understanding the operation of broadcast systems, the differences and advantages of digital over analog systems, familiarity with the reception of broadcast signals through different channels and devices, and key aspects of planning the broadcasting spectrum.
