Subject description
Prerequisits:
- Enrolment into the program.
- Prerequisite for exam includes the well performed laboratory exercises.
Content (Syllabus outline):
- The role and the basic characteristics of electric power systems, basic operation of distribution and transmission of electric power systems. Their connection to power generators and electric power plants.
- Basic characteristics of the most important processes connected with conversion of energy to electric energy: energy of water, energy of coal, gas and oil, energy of nuclear fuel, energy of wind, energy of sun.
- Energy needs. Characteristics of electric power consumption, efficient use of energy, the role of energy in society and impacts of electric power generation on the environment.
- Relevant problems: the reliability of electric power supply, design of power systems, power systems maintenance, new generation technology, transmission, distribution and consumption of electric energy, environmental issues.
Objectives and competences:
- The objective is to show the students the needs for conversion of energy to electric energy. The energy demand is increasing, specially, in less developed countries.
- Students will obtain basic knowledge in the field of electric energy supply. They will learn basic characteristics of conversion to electric energy, transmission and distribution of electric energy.
- Special emphasis will be placed to preservation of the environment which has to go on in parallel with fulfilling the needs of the consumption.
- Renewable sources will be considered, such as wind energy, water energy, energy from the sun and biomass, which is a specific natural asset of Slovenia.
Intended learning outcomes:
Students will understand the needs for electric energy supply, the conversion processes from primary energy to electric energy, the problems for assuring the electric energy supply to customers and the impact of the related processes to the environment.
Students will be able to solve basic problems in the field of electric energy field. They will understand the term the rational use of electric energy and the term renewable sources of electric energy.
Learning and teaching methods:
Lectures and exercises.
