Subject description

Prerequisits:

  • As specified by internal acts of the University of Ljubljana and Faculty of Electrical Engineering.
  • To attend the written exam, the candidate has to complete laboratory work and write the associated reports.

Content (Syllabus outline):

  • Review of passive and active components of electronic circuits in the field of power electronics and control technique. Linear and nonlinear resistors, capacitors, thermistors, varistors. Pulse operation of passive components, the parasitic effects of real components. Discrete semiconductor components (diodes, bipolar and unipolar transistors) in analog and digital circuits. The design and calculation of circuits and their performance evaluation.
  • Processing of analog signals with operational amplifiers. The basic linear and nonlinear circuits with operational amplifiers. Active filters, reference sources, voltages stabilizers in the analog version.
  • Digital logic circuits components. Basic logic gates, decoders, multiplexers, and others.
  • Discrete sensors and transducers. Static and dynamic characteristics. Criteria for selection of sensors applied for the design of complex sensor systems. Matching circuits with discrete and integrated components.
  • Systems integration of electronic sub-assemblies.

Objectives and competences:

  • The aim of the course: to upgrade the knowledge of discrete and integrated, linear and nonlinear components. Completing the knowledge towards linking of individual components into larger systems. The focus is therefore oriented at practical examples, analysis and dimensioning of the basic and of more complex circuits, which appear in mechatronic systems.
  • General competencies: abstract and analytical thinking, capability to define and formalize the problem, literature study.
  • Subject-specific competencies: basic engineering knowledge in the form of: identification and problem solving, integration of existing solutions, evaluation of the given solution.

Intended learning outcomes:

Understanding the operation and physical limitations of passive and active analog and digital components in simple and complex circuits. To gain deeper knowledge during the analysis and design steps in problem solving of partial and complex circuits, especially in mechatronic systems with typical pulse mode operation. Knowledge of specific circuits and signal processing in the field of measurement and closed-loop control techniques. Understanding and application of learned principles in the identification and analysis of the components discussed in simple as well as complex circuits.

Learning and teaching methods:

Classical lectures with a number of practical tutorial examples. Encouragement of individual study in the form of homeworks. Laboratory work for practical verification of lecture material.
